Beeswax

Beeswax is an occlusive: it sits on the skin and slows water loss, which is why it works in lip balms and salves. That is the whole of the evidence. We found no trial of beeswax on its own for dry skin, lips or hair, and the small trials in eczema and nappy rash tested blends where the honey, propolis or oil could be doing the work. Contact allergy is uncommon but real, mainly on the lips, and it often overlaps with propolis allergy.

What it's used for

Evidence is rated per use. The same ingredient can be strong for one thing and traditional for another.

A 2023 review of beeswax in skincare found only five clinical studies, three in animals and two in humans, and concluded that further studies are warranted. A 2026 review calls the evidence largely indirect: beeswax forms a film that reduces water loss. The American Academy of Dermatology says an ointment such as white petroleum jelly seals in water for longer than waxes or oils, so beeswax is a pleasant option, not a stronger one.1,2,3

Eczema, psoriasis and nappy rash (in blends)Traditional

Small trials tested blends, not beeswax. A honey, olive oil and beeswax mix (1:1:1) helped 8 of 10 people with dermatitis after 2 weeks in a small, partly controlled study, and 12 infants with nappy rash improved over 7 days with no control group.

A 2026 trial of a cream with propolis, beeswax, bee larvae and oil beat olive oil and zinc oxide on day 2 of mild nappy rash. Honey, propolis and the other oils are all active candidates, so none of these results can be credited to beeswax.8,9,10

Beeswax is used in pomades, braiding wax and hair balms because it is a stiff, sticky wax that holds hair in place and coats it. We found no trial or laboratory study of beeswax on hair strength, frizz, breakage or growth, so this use rests on how the wax behaves, not on measured benefit.

How much

Ranges below are what studies used and what supplements commonly contain. They are not a recommendation for you. Start at the low end.

Studied blends
Honey, olive oil and beeswax 1:1:1; up to 4 times a day for 7 days9,8
The nappy rash study applied the blend four times a day for 7 days. The dermatitis study used it for 2 weeks. Both tested a mixture, not beeswax alone.
Allergy in routine testing
About 3 in 2,828 patients (0.11%)4,5
Reactions to white beeswax in one UK patch-test series of people with suspected contact dermatitis, as reported in a 2026 review. It is much higher in selected patients: in a Swedish clinic, 17 of 95 people with lip inflammation, facial eczema or suspected beeswax allergy reacted to beeswax.
Amount
No evidence-based amount1,2
No source we read tested an amount of beeswax on skin, lips or hair. In a balm it is the stiffening agent, so the amount sets firmness, not effect.
Timing · The nappy rash blend was applied four times a day. For lips and dry skin no source we read tested a schedule, and balms are simply reapplied when the surface feels dry. With food? · Not applicable; the sources we read cover beeswax on the skin, not as a supplement. How long to trial · The blend trials judged results at 1 to 2 weeks. If a lip balm makes your lips redder, itchier or more chapped within a few days, stop: it may be an allergy.

How people take it

Lip balm or salveReapply as neededBeeswax is in about 4 in 10 lip balms (1,864 of 4,775 products in one survey the review cites). A 2026 review found all 11 published case reports of allergic contact dermatitis to beeswax involved lip balms or emollients.
Skin balm, salve or body butterThin layerUsed as a thickener and occlusive. We found no trial of a plain beeswax balm for dry skin, so it is not shown to beat a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser.
Hair wax, pomade or braiding balmSmall amount on hairBeeswax is a stiff, sticky wax that holds hair. It is a styling aid with no measured hair benefit, and it can build up on the scalp.
Honey, olive oil and beeswax blend1:1:1, up to 4 times a day (as studied)The blend tested in small dermatitis and nappy rash studies. Do not treat a rash with it in place of medical advice.

Safety

Who should avoid
  • Known beeswax or propolis allergy — beeswax reactions, mostly on the lips, are documented
  • Lips that stay red, cracked or itchy — a balm can be the cause, so ask about patch testing
  • Treating eczema, psoriasis or nappy rash with a homemade blend — trials used mixtures, not beeswax
  • Expecting hair growth or repair — no trial supports it
Known interactions
No interactions in our data. Absence of a flag is not clearance.

Questions people ask

Is beeswax good for hair?

It holds and coats hair, which is why it is used in pomades and braiding wax. We found no trial showing it reduces breakage, adds moisture or helps hair grow, so any benefit is cosmetic. It can also build up, so wash it out and do not use it as a hair-growth treatment.

Is beeswax good for skin and lips?

It is an occlusive, so it slows water loss and softens dry skin and lips. That is the extent of the evidence: we found no trial of plain beeswax for either. The American Academy of Dermatology says a thick ointment like white petroleum jelly seals in water longer than waxes or oils.

Can you be allergic to beeswax?

Yes, though it is uncommon. About 3 in 2,828 people (0.11%) with suspected contact dermatitis reacted to white beeswax in one UK series, but 17 of 95 people in a Swedish clinic with lip inflammation, facial eczema or suspected beeswax allergy did.

In a 2026 review, all 11 published case reports involved lip balms or emollients, and 14 of those 17 Swedish patients also reacted to propolis.

Does beeswax contain propolis, and does that matter?

It is often said that beeswax is contaminated with propolis, but a 2026 review found the evidence inconsistent. None of 500 cosmetics listed propolis as an ingredient, and reactions to beeswax in people allergic to propolis appear uncommon, mostly as lip reactions from balms.

The review concluded that propolis-allergic people do not need to avoid all cosmetics containing beeswax. If you have a known propolis allergy, ask your doctor and patch test any balm.

What are the uses and benefits of beeswax?

Its main use is as a stiffening agent and occlusive in lip balms, salves, creams and hair waxes. The benefit is a barrier that slows water loss. Reports of it helping eczema or nappy rash come from blends with honey, propolis and oils, so they do not show beeswax works alone.
